Old Wives Tale Gender Predictions VS What I Actually Got

Old wives tale gender predictions were predictions made way back in time whether a woman was having a boy or a girl. These consisted of many different ways to predict what you were having without the technological advancement of ultrasounds.

Although there are more straightforward ways to predict the gender of your baby like ultrasound at the 15-week mark or even early gender prediction blood tests at as early as 8 weeks of pregnancy, performing old wives tale gender predictions tests can be a lot more fun. But obviously, it’s not as accurate or sometimes never accurate (you have a 50/50 chance) compared to advances in medicine and technology.

The Different Old Wives Tale Gender Predictions

1. Chinese Gender Calendar

If you google ‘Chinese gender calendar’, you’ll find a bunch of blue and pink calendars that show you what gender baby you’re having according to your age and what month you conceived.

For me, the Chinese gender calendar predicted that I was going to have a baby girl and it was definitely right. However, I do know that this specific old wives tale gender prediction did not work for some of my friends and family.

2. Pregnancy Dreams

They say you’re going to have the gender opposite of what you dream. Many pregnant women dream about their babies including myself. I remember a specific dream where I was in the delivery room giving birth to a baby boy. And my husband and I were writing down his name.

But guess what? I ended up having a baby girl. So I guess you can say this old wives tale worked for me.

3. The Ring Test

The Ring Test is when you tie a string around your wedding ring and hang it above your belly. And if it swings around in a circle, you’re having a boy. But if it swings back and forth, you’re having a girl.

I did this test with my mother-in-law and my wedding ring swung in a circle. So this tale was inaccurate for me.

4. Been Extra Clumsy?

You might be a clumsy person naturally. But if you’ve been feeling a lot more clumsy than you’re predicted to have a boy. And if you’ve been rather graceful, you’re having a girl.

I didn’t really pay attention to this old wives tale very much because I tend to be clumsy regardless.

5. Baby’s Heart Rate

How fast is your baby’s heart rate? If it’s on the slower side around or under 140 bpm (beats per minute), then you’re having a boy. If the baby’s heart rate is above 140 bpm, you’re having a baby girl.

At our first ultrasound, my baby’s heart rate was around 155 bpm. According to the old wives tale gender predictions, I was predicted to have a baby girl which was accurate.

6. Skin Glowing?

Is your skin glowing and blemish-free? You’re having a baby boy. But if you’re having a lot of acne and skin problems, you’re probably having a baby girl. They say girls steal the mom’s beauty!

7. How Are You Carrying?

This old wives tale is pretty popular and you might’ve heard of it. If you’re carrying low, you’re having a boy. And if you’re carrying high, you’re having a girl.

I was a bit confused on whether I was carrying high or low. Some people told me I looked like I was carrying low while others noticed me carrying high. I have a rather short torso, so there weren’t many places for my baby bump to hang out.

8. Body Temperature

If you’ve been feeling cold, you’re supposedly having a boy. And if you’ve been feeling warm and hot, you’re having a girl.

This could also be a bit skewed depending on where you live and the season you’re pregnant.

9. Morning Sickness

Have you been experiencing morning sickness? They say you’re having a girl if you’re having nausea and vomiting.

10. Color Of Your Nipples

I didn’t know this was one until recently. But apparently, if your nipples are darker, you’re having a baby boy.

But keep in mind that your nipples darken naturally during pregnancy due to the increase in the surge of hormones. John Hopkins Medicine debunks this and a few other old wives’ tale gender predictions.

11. Weight Placement

Are you noticing more weight being packed out front? Or more weight packed around your hips and bottom? If it’s more out front and people comment on how you don’t look pregnant from the back, you’re most likely having a girl.

But if you’re seeing more weight around your hips, butt, and legs, then you’re having a boy. For me, I’ve always been commented on how people would not have known I was pregnant from the back. And I had a girl, so this old wives tale was accurate for me.

Final Thoughts

Although these old wives tale gender prediction tests are fun, keep in mind that it’s not going to be as accurate as getting an ultrasound or blood work done to confirm your baby’s gender.
