Having your first period is a pivotal time in your daughter’s life.
KidsHealth states that most girls most girls get their first period when they are around 12 years of age or any time between the ages 10 and 15.
A lot of changes happen to their body as they go through puberty.
So why not celebrate these changes and their first menstrual cycle by putting together a first period gift basket or throwing your daughter an intimate first period party!
As you may or may not know, I have a bonus daughter who I love so much. And she so happened to have started her first period.
A few years prior, my niece started her first period and I had thrown her a period party where my bonus daughter was also there for.
Ever since then, each year, she would tell me how excited she was to start her first period. And here we are 3 years later, her time has come.
My First Period Story
You may be wondering what influenced me to throw her a period party and put together a period basket.
Did my mom throw me a first period party? No.
Was I gifted a period basket? No.
My mom made it a special milestone for me starting my first period. She did this by taking me to my favorite restaurant and then taking me shopping for feminine products.
And I wanted to show my niece and my step daughter that starting their first period was special and it didn’t have to be a dreadful thing.
First Period Basket For My Daughter
The two things I wanted to make sure I had in her period gift basket were pads and snacks.
Everything else came together after some brainstorming and thinking to myself what I would need and want in my period basket.
These are everything I added to her basket: (each thing listed is a link!)
Acne patches
I found some good ones at my local T.J. Maxx but you can always order something similar on Amazon or Target.
Spa Headband
I bought basically everything except for the pads and snacks at T.J. Maxx but you can find any of this just about anywhere.
There’s a similar one on Amazon and it even comes with two!
Feminine Products
I didn’t include tampons because I felt like pads were more appropriate for her first period basket.
You could always include night time pads and panty liners.
Snacks
I asked my daughter if she could choose her favorite snacks and candy what would it be. And she said Hot Cheetos, Jolly Ranchers, and Twix so that is what she got!
Hair Brush
Why a hair brush? Honestly, I don’t have a good answer for you. But it was super cute and went with the theme of her assortment of self-care basket.
Lip Balm
Girls love cute things and I thought the macaroon shaped lip balm was very her.
You could always add in some sort of lip moisturizing balm or gloss in your daughter’s favorite flavor.
Face Mask
A face mask went with everything else in her personal care basket and I knew she would use it. Breakouts can be bad for some teenage girls during the start of their puberty.
If you daughter has sensitive skin, be sure to read the labels and find something that best suits her.
Pad Holder
A pad holder or a travel makeup bag is the perfect way for your teenage daughter to carry her feminine products at school so that it’s not on display.
Water Bottle
Hydration is very important during menstrual cycles so I decided to get her a water bottle that she could use at home and take with her on car rides.

Other First Period Gift Ideas
There are so many other things you can include in your daughter’s first menstrual gift basket that I did not include.
Diary
Is she a writer? You could get her a diary or even have one personalized with her name engraved in it.
Period Underwear
I had no idea period underwear even existed until I was shopping for panties one day.
A Period Book
A book all about periods and puberty might be the perfect addition to her gift basket.
Bath Bombs
Bath bombs or anything bath related like a bath pillow.
Heating Pad
One thing I always used growing up during every menstrual cycle was my mom’s heating pad.
Candle
Some of my favorite candles are from Target and I love how automatically relaxed you feel after lighting a candle.
Face Roller
Face rollers or facial cleansing brush would make a great addition. You really can’t go wrong with any product that relates to skincare.
Sleep Mask
According to Casper, sleep masks stimulate darkness which not only helps you fall asleep but also improve your overall sleep quality.
Giftcard
A giftcard to her favorite clothes store. Or a Starbucks gift card never hurt anyone.
First Period Favorite Meal
If putting together a period gift basket doesn’t fit your budget, you can always do something as simple as cooking your daughter’s favorite dish or taking her out for an ice cream date.
Period Party Ideas
Often times when we think of a party, we automatically think a lot of people are involved.
But girls going through their first menstrual cycle are not going to want to announce this party to anyone but their very close friends and family.
For my niece’s period party, it was my mother-in-law, step daughter, and myself. My daughter’s party consisted of my husband, mother-in-law, my niece, and myself.
Both parties were very intimate.
These were the basic things we got for the party.
- cake mixture of her choice
- icing to write on the cake
- whipped or icing topping
- “happy birthday” candles and left the “birth” part out
Each of them made a special wish when blowing out their candle.
Some other things you could do is get a custom cake made and add red balloons around the house for some period flare.

I hope this post was helpful and insightful. Hopefully this helps you create the best period gift basket for your daughter! I am sure it will make for a special core memory for her!
