It’s not easy dealing with a fussy or clingy baby. And I remember desperately looking for fussy baby tips and how to survive those long days where it seemed like it was nonstop. My baby was very fussy since she came out of the womb and the nurses would specifically comment on how they’d never heard a baby scream and cry as mine did.
That obviously didn’t make me feel good being a new mom. And I thought she would eventually grow out of her fussiness or colic. But I was wrong. As she grew and developed, was able to walk around, and found her voice a little more, the fussiness evolved. And after a while, I found ways to survive and overcome days where my baby would be fussy all day long. Or rather learn how to better cope.
10 Overcoming Fussy Baby Tips
You might have had a colicky baby. And if you don’t know what colic is, the rule of thumb for colic is when a baby cries for longer than 3 hours for 3 days a week and for 3 weeks or longer.
And if your colicky baby transitioned into a fussy baby, then continue reading this blog post on fussy baby tips.
1. Daily reminders
Sometimes you need daily reminders to keep yourself moving forward and not let yourself sink. And some of those daily reminders for myself would be that “this too shall pass” or that “this moment is just temporary”.
There will be days where the nonstop screaming and crying will break you down. But remind yourself that they’re just a baby and it’s not intentional. God only gives us what we can handle. And if He gave you a fussy baby, then He must think very highly of you (what I would keep telling myself haha)!
2. Have an outlet
Call your friend or family member and simply vent to them. Get your feelings out and have that outlet so you’re not bottling it all up.
Sometimes, all you need is someone to talk to. There’s a large community of moms on Facebook or various other social media channels that are waiting to do the same. You’re definitely not the only one with a cranky or fussy baby. Because I thought the same.
At one point, I asked myself and my husband, why is my baby like this? Why can’t I make her happy or stay content? What did I do wrong? Why do I feel like my baby is the only baby that’s fussy all day?
3. Know your limits
It’s so important for you to know your limits. If you feel like you’re about to burst, then you need to take yourself out of the situation.
Immediately step out or go to a different room and close the door. Take a deep breath, tell yourself your daily reminders, and know they’re not intentionally trying to make you upset.

4. Give snacks and toys
There will definitely be times where no snacks or toys are going to make your fussy baby stop crying. But it’s worth a shot. Give them a popsicle, their favorite snack, or something completely new like a plastic mixing bowl that’s safe for them to play with.
Even if this gives you an extra 5 to 10 minutes to take a breather, it’s worth trying. And it might even lead to distracting them from whatever they’re upset about in the first place.
5. Step outside
Maybe being outside to play will change the environment for your baby and they won’t be as fussy. We took advantage of the warmer weather and would be outside almost every day because it helped my baby be less fussy.
6. Self-care
I have several self-care tips that I know you’ll love in my other blog post. But a few examples of self-care would be taking a nice bubble bath, reading a good book, getting a good nap in, and getting your nails done.
In order to give your baby the best possible care, you have to take care of yourself. One of my favorite sayings is “remember to take care of yourself, you can’t pour from an empty cup”.
7. Ask for help
Ask your partner, friend, or family to watch your baby for an hour or two. And go do something other than being a mom. It’s okay to ask for help and it doesn’t make you any less of a mom by doing so.
8. Naps are everything
Try taking a nap when your baby naps. Even if you feel like you have a million and one things to do around the house, take a nap.
I promise sleeping might be exactly what you need. It takes a lot of energy and drains you dealing with a fussy baby.
9. Workout
Working out is a natural stress-reliever. When you workout, your body releases endorphins which are basically happy hormones.

10. Let it be
Don’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong to cause your baby to be fussy all day or fussy all the time. And definitely let go of the mom guilt.
No two babies are alike. And some babies just happen to be fussier and crankier than others. Sometimes the best thing to do is to let it be. Let them scream, cry, fuss, and pay no attention. And over time you’ll learn to block it out while they learn to grow out of it.
Final Thoughts
I hope these fussy baby tips help you cope better and get through those rougher days. Some days are harder than others. And another thing that’s helped me get through those days is looking back at old pictures and videos of when my baby was itty bitty. They’re not going to be this small forever and we’re going to miss these days!
